Can AI Models Capture Natural Language Argumentation?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Formal AI models of argumentation define arguments as reasons that support claims (which may be beliefs, decisions, actions, . . .). Such arguments may be attacked by other arguments. The main issue is then to identify the accepted ones. Several semantics were thus proposed for evaluating the arguments. Works in linguistics focus mainly on understanding the notion of argument, identifying its types, and describing different forms of counter-argumentation. This paper advocates that such typologies are instrumental for capturing real argumentations. It shows that some of the forms cannot be handled properly by AI models. Finally, it shows that the use of square of oppositions (a very old logical device) illuminates the interrelations between the different forms of argumentation.

On Natural Language Generation of Formal Argumentation
In this paper we provide a first analysis of the research questions that arise when dealing with the problem of communicating pieces of formal argumentation through natural language interfaces. It is a generally held opinion that formal models of argumentation naturally capture human argument, and some preliminary studies have focused on justifying this view. Unfortunately, the results are not ...
متن کاملApplications of Argumentation Schemes
Argumentation schemes capture common, stereotypical patterns of reasoning which are nondeductive and nonmonotonic. As interest in understanding these schemes from a theoretical point of view grows, so too does an awareness within computational work that these schemes might yield powerful techniques in a range of domains. This paper aims to perform two functions. First, to briefly review the lit...
متن کاملUncertainty and fuzziness: from natural language to argumentation models
Uncertainty and fuzziness pervade natural language both explicitly and implicitly. The explicit presence of uncertainty and fuzziness is exemplified by statements like "I believe that tomorrow will probably be a bit colder than today", while the presence of implicit uncertainty and/or fuzziness can be referred to background domain knowledge, e.g. in the statement "Tomorrow will be rainy because...
متن کاملAI and Law: A fruitful synergy
AI and Law is a classic field for AI research: it poses difficult and interesting problems for AI, and its projects inform both AI and its focal domain, the law itself. This special issue reports on a range of projects, from those where the law motivates fundamental research and whose results reach beyond the legal domain, to those that partake of the benefits of techniques and wisdom from AI a...
متن کاملNoDE: A Benchmark of Natural Language Arguments
In the latest years, natural models of argumentation and argument mining are becoming more and more important topics in the argumentation community. Given this tendency, there is the need to produce standard datasets on which natural language approaches to argumentation can be evaluated. In this paper, we present NoDE, a benchmark of natural language arguments composed of three datasets, built ...
